Hadrosaurs are a large group of plant eating dinosaurs. They are interesting in terms of locomotion because they may have been either quadrupedal or bipedal or some facultatively either. These files represent the hadrosaur Edmontosaurus annectens and demonstrate a range of locomotor options.
These are the model definition files that accompany the paper:
Sellers, W.I., Manning, P.L., Lyson, T., Stevens, K., and Margetts, L., 2009. Virtual Palaeontology: Gait Reconstruction of Extinct Vertebrates Using High Performance Computing. Palaeontologia Electronica Vol. 12, Issue 3; 11A: 26p; http://palaeo-electronica.org/2009_3/180/index.html
The full details about how the models were created and how the gait was generated can be found in the paper. The models are designed to be loaded into GaitSym and include the XML files defining the physics of the model and a set of hulls representing the body segments.
Hadrosaur_Models.zip (43KB)
To run the models you just need to download the version of GaitSym that matches your computer (or the full version if you want all the documentation etc.). You start up the program and you need to Open one of the .xml files (e.g. Biopedal_Run.xml). If you do not see the segment outlines then you need to go to Preferences and set the Graphic Path to point to the folder that contains the .obj files that represent the body segments. The run button is on the View palette next to the button marked Step. Full details are in the documentation.
